Master's Level Nursing Practice

"Recognizes that nursing practice, at the master’s level, is broadly defined as any form of nursing intervention that influences healthcare outcomes for individuals, populations, or systems. Masters-level nursing graduates must have an advanced level of understanding of nursing and relevant sciences as well as the ability to integrate this knowledge into practice. Nursing practice interventions include both direct and indirect care components"

(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011, p. 5).

Nurse practitioners must have advanced knowledge of advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment.  Nurse practitioners at King University must also complete 600 clinical hours of advanced clinical training to care for patients across the lifespan including pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics.  When I look at my first semester in clinical and compare how I have progressed to this point, the difference drastic.  When I began my first clinical site, I had very little confidence in my communication skills, assessment skills, as well as my plan for each visit.  However, after completing advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment, as well as completing 600 clinical hours I am more confident in all aspects of practice.  I am able to communicate effectively with patients and members of the healthcare team.  My assessment skills are more complete, in-depth, and more efficient.  I have developed a strong skill for developing a differential to assist me in determining an appropriate diagnosis and plan.  I am dedicated to leading a life of continued learning and professional growth as education is not something that can ever be completed.  We must always continue to grow and be recipients of new evidence-based knowledge.

The work provided below represents my master's level understanding of nursing and sciences and my knowledge of how to apply these essentials into practice.  My paper on pertussis is an excellent example of the disease process of this infection and the role of the provider in the treatment and management of this infection.

The pediatric case study is a presentation regarding a pediatric condition that shows how it can present and how it is managed at the advanced practice level.

The service-learning presentation provided below shows how I and other King University graduate nursing students volunteered to assist Children's Hospital in giving chronically ill children a fun night out.  Nursing is not just about science.  It's also about caring for the whole person.  This experience allowed me to be of service to these chronically ill children to help them take their mind off of their illness for a night and just have fun.

The infant SOAP note below is a representation of my interaction with a new mother and her infant and provides in great detail my advanced knowledge of nursing and sciences and how to apply that knowledge into practice.
