Translation and Integrating Scholarship into Practice

"Recognizes that the master’s-prepared nurse applies research outcomes within the practice setting, resolves practice problems, works as a change agent, and disseminates results"

(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011, p. 4).

Translating scholarship into practice has been a principle instilled in my practice during my undergraduate course work. This program further reinforced the need to incorporate the best evidence and standards of care into my practice. Prior to this program, I had the desire to know the best evidence-based practice that drives providers decisions, but I did not know where to look.  That desire to know is what led me into this program, which has not only shown me the best resources available with evidence-based material but also how to interpret and apply it to practice.  During my clinic experience, I have continually used resources, such as UpToDate to employ evidence-based practice. My coursework has encouraged me to question current practices that are followed with little evidence to support its effectiveness. This led to sharpened research skills as well as a strong respect for the necessity of evidence-based practice.

The Family History Form assignment is a very detailed assignment on an individual's family history that outlines his risks for disease.  It also provides evidence-based knowledge and resources on how to reduce the risk of the diseases that are prominent in the patient's family history.

The Research Proposal assignment below is a research proposal prepared by myself and Staci Bubp aiming to identify the effects on family members in the room with family members being resuscitated and the effects on family members outside of the room of their family members being resuscitated.

The Annotated Bibliography paper discusses research into the topic of family members' response to being in the room of a loved one being resuscitated.  In this study, researchers found that anxiety and depression were higher among family members that were not present during CPR than family members that were present.

The researchers also found that family members' presence during CPR did not negatively affect the healthcare team.

The pain SOAP note is a patient encounter that I had in clinical with a patient that was experiencing pain.  The SOAP note provides great detail of the assessment and management of the patient experiencing pain.  It is important to be able to translate research and guidelines and apply them to practice to ensure patient safety.
